Despite its clumsily generic name, Legend: Legacy of the Dragons offers an original take on the free-to-play browser-based fantasy MMORPG. Legend: Legacy of the Dragons relies heavily on text supported with a point-and-click interface. Instead of the usual slow city-building and resource management, this browser game features PVP and PVE combat, warring factions, and an overarching story line.
Factions and Quests
Your first choice upon character selection is whether you want to play for the conventional-looking Humans or the decidedly more demonic-looking Magmar race.
You might remember that a little place called Azeroth had opposing factions too, but the formula works well here. Whether you’re Human or Magmar, you’ll get a nice (for a browser game) selection of character options. Choose a face you like because you’ll be seeing your character in every battle screen.
At first, you’ll mainly concern yourself with questing near your starting zone. Although Legend: Legacy of the Dragons is based in Germany, well-crafted English translations make the quests and NPCs who give them feel three-dimensional despite the game’s 2D format. NPCs aren’t the only ones who’ll lend you a hand on your way through the world of Faeo; check your chat screen for helpful players and ever-present staff members who can mentor you.
Graphics and Interface
If you’ve ever played one of the old Myst-style point and click games, you’ll recognize the beautifully rendered, but static game environments in Legend: Legacy of the Dragons. The game’s attention to detail brings these painted landscapes to life surprisingly well, though, and while you might miss the more detailed animation of a full MMORPG, you’ll still get a strong sense of place from the attractive scenery.
You maneuver your character through the static screens by clicking on features of the landscape as they light up or by clicking on an overhead map view. Static gameplay won’t ever make you feel the wind in your hair as you move through the world, but the point-and-click interface is simple to use and makes it difficult to get lost in Faeo.
The other screen you’ll see often is the battle screen, which is appropriately dynamic compared to wandering through the realm. Your character faces off against an opponent in a Mortal Kombat-style screen. While your initial combat options are limited, you’ll eventually be able to choose from a number of different combat skills depending on your chosen class.
If Legend: Legacy of the Dragons has one major flaw, it’s the loading times between screens. Once you’ve challenged an opponent, you’ll be stuck looking at a loading screen for about twenty or thirty seconds. However, if you have the space for it you can download much of the art to decrease load times significantly.
Free to Play–But Should You?
Legend: Legacy of the Dragons mixes disparate game styles into a winning and attractive browser game. A little Myst here, a little Mortal Kombat there, and a taste of World of Warcraft’s faction system makes this free-to-play game well worth a look. Only lengthy load times kept L:LotD from a perfect 5. Try this game if you’re hungry for some old-style gaming with a surprisingly novel flavor.
