The Rogue Calling in Rift
When you think of the traditional RPG class of the Rogue, you don’t typically think of versatility. However, in keeping with Rift’s overall theme, the Rogue calling here is actually capable of much more than double fisted damage per second.
Much like other MMOs, your Rogue will outfit himself in leather armor and equip a selection of daggers, firearms, bows and swords. The souls you choose to attune will determine exactly what your weapon set up turns out to be, as some souls use certain weapons to a greater advantage. What you won’t be expecting is that your Rogue is capable of filling all four roles in a party.
Assassin: Uses stealth, shadows and positioning to his advantage while doing direct damage. Poisons his blades, uses abilities that cause bleeds, stun and blinding effects.
Bard: Support class that can heal and uses Motifs, Anthems and Fanfares to buff party members. Support abilities use finishers called Codas.
Bladedancer: Damage dealer for PvE combat, combines fast, high damage attacks. After dodging, parrying or avoiding an incoming attack, the Bladedancer’s dps is increased.
Marksman: Uses bows and firearms to stay at range for damage, has a knock back and several area of effect abilities. Can evade enemy crowd control abilities like roots and traps with ease.
Nightblade: Stealth specialist with magic attacks using Fire and Death elements. Has crowd control abilities such as snares and can frenzy for extra damage.
Ranger: Can do damage at range as well as up close and personal. Uses tamed pets to provide additional dps. Has several area of effect abilities.
Riftstalker: Can tank for a party with ease, has abilities that boost personal hit points and provide increased healing received from other party members. Can generate additional threat to maintain aggro and can absorb a certain percentage of incoming damage.
Saboteur: Ranged dps using explosives and bombs. Has crowd control abilities to snare enemy mobs and players. Can redirect aggro onto another player, such as the party tank.
You can combine multiple souls that all do either ranged or melee damage, or pick one of each for a more well-rounded play style. The Riftstalker and Bard souls are the most unlike a traditional Rogue in that they can fulfill other party roles than just damage.
Keep in mind that dps Rogues will probably prefer to keep the fight short and sweet, delivering large scale damage as quickly as possible. If he’s bitten off more than he can chew, a hasty retreat may be in order and should never be considered a shameful tactic. After all, surviving is the name of the game, and honor is a relative theory.
