Patch 1.8, tentatively titled Infernal Dawn after the raid it is planned to contain, will shake up the status quo of Rift as we know it. We’ve already heard that the Carnival of the Ascended will be culminating with the Infernal Dawn World Event, but Trion Worlds hasn’t told us exactly what that means.
Mount Carcera is ready to erupt, and according to the Community Blog, we can expect to see this happen in Patch 1.8 as part of the World Event. The Infernal Dawn raid looks gorgeous, an underground cavern filled with natural crystal deposits, leading into a final, lava filled chamber where your raid party will engage the bosses of Laethys and Maelforge.
The Community has been adamant about the fact that one year following Rift’s release, their end game content is just now beginning. The team is reported to be hard at work on future raiding and dungeon content, all new souls you can attune to make your class even more versatile, and enhancements to the recently revamped PvP system we got in Patch 1.7.
When that PvP revamp came along, people began gravitating toward this play style, making faction imbalances on certain servers obvious. Trion addressed that with the Mercenary system, a feature that may randomly ask your character to fight for the opposite side when you get into a Warfront.
That Mercenary system is in contrast with the way other games like World of Warcraft have handled faction imbalances in PvP. Rather than giving the less populated side a buff to compensate, or opening up Warfronts to a cross faction system, the Mercenary system asks players to turn traitor for a bit. That may ultimately cause some discord, especially from role players and those gamers who feel a real connection to their characters.
All in all, we can see some big changes on the horizon for Rift, and we’re definitely excited about them. What do you think of the journey Rift has taken over the last year? Where would you like to see them go in the future? Please let us know in the comments, and be sure to keep checking back in here at MMORPG1.com for all the latest Rift news, updates, and speculation.
