Rift’s first expansion, Storm Legion, is coming soon, and the marketers at Trion Worlds have done something just the tiniest bit revolutionary with the advertising: it’s the word “included.”

As noted on the official Rift community forums, Trion revealed in an E3 interview that Storm Legion will include the full base version of the game. Why do you care? Because if you haven’t tried Rift yet, you’ll be able to pick up both the base version and the expansion for just the $40 USD price of the expansion.

What if you already have the base game? Well, then, you’ll get a $10 USD discount on Storm Legion when it releases.

There’s no word yet on how the discount will work, although we’d assume you’ll either have to purchase a digital copy directly from Trion Worlds using your existing Rift account. There might also be a way to provide that discount in the form of additional game time, if you’d prefer a box copy.

This is a model that EverQuest has been using for quite some time, although other MMOs have only recently caught on to some degree. Purchasing the base copy of World of Warcraft includes the first expansion, Burning Crusade, but none of the subsequent expansions include the full base version of Vanilla WoW.

Storm Legion, which is set to release before the end of the year, will bring several new elements to the flagging MMO. Some of these include an increased level cap, two full new continents filled with quests and instanced dungeons, and player housing of a sort.

Are you playing Rift? Did you ever? Why have you stayed? Why did you leave? Leave us some comments here at MMORPG1.com and your experience may be featured in a future Rift editorial!
