The first closed beta test has been completed for NCSoft’s upcoming MMO Guild Wars 2, and based on the results, the developer is looking at a 2012 release date for the title. ArenaNet has stated repeatedly that the game will go live when it’s done, and not a moment sooner.

Open beta testing is set to begin in February 2012 with a limited press invitation. Ordinary-Joe players will begin seeing invites in March and April. If The Secret World is able to go live by April, NCSoft will have some decisions to make. Rather than rush to launch and send an unfinished product to compete, they may be better off waiting until they have something polished to offer.

With only so many subscription dollars available to the makers of MMOs, Guild Wars 2 has probably chosen the best situation with no monthly sub fee. Of course, that probably means we’ll be paying for updates and content patches a bit more frequently, but if the game is anything like the trailers and screenshots appear, it’ll be well worth it.
