An undisclosed number of Bioware employees have been laid off from the company’s Austin facility, while others were invited to join other Electronic Arts programs. Among those now looking for greener pastures is Stephen Reid, the former Star Wars: The Old Republic Community Manager, and according to his Twitter feed, he didn’t see it coming.

While gamers are lining up to declare this evidence of Star Wars: The Old Republic’s decline, industry insiders claim that the lay-offs are to be expected at this stage of an MMOs life cycle. It’s too soon to be looking for a free-to-play announcement, or mass server mergers, or anything else that speaks of an MMO failure.

It may not, however, be too soon to start preparing for those things. Because Electronic Arts and Bioware don’t release subscriber numbers — an probably won’t ever unless they suddenly begin to rise — we have no reason to disregard those player complaints we’re seeing about empty servers.
